About Us

Let us acquaint you with the Eta Kappa Nu Association. It is the International Honor Society for Electrical Engineers. A Chapter or Eta Branch of Eta Kappa Nu has been established at your College, Company, or City and at approximately 200 other locations in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Outstanding persons are elected to Eta Kappa Nu primarily from the junior and senior classes of accredited undergraduate programs. Graduate Students and distinguished professional engineers are also eligible. Eligibility, naturally, must depend on marked ability, as evidenced by scholarship, personal character, useful voluntary services, and distinguished accomplishments, all of which indicate that the candidate will be or is a success in his profession.

Eta Kappa Nu has grown steadily since its establishment at the University of Illinois in 1904. In the first ten years, ten chapters were formed. In the first fifty years, 56 chapters were in existence. In 1983 there were approximately 200 chapters including branches of Eta in five foreign countries and numerous Alumni Chapters in various cities and corporations.

Eta Kappa Nu continues to grow and to influence the progress of the electrical engineering profession through its high ideals about scholarship, character, and service to fellow man.

Wouldn't you want to strive for the distinction Eta Kappa Nu gives its members?

Chapter History

In November, 1997, Professor Thomas E. Wade of the Electrical Engineering faculty contacted Dr. J. Robert Betten, Executive Director of ETA KAPPA NU International, concerning the possibility of forming a chapter of ETA KAPPA NU at the University of South Florida. On January 12, 1998, the Electrical Engineering faculty unanimously approved the concept at its Spring Faculty Meeting. On March 19, 1998 the first formal organizational meeting of the new chapter was held with Professor Wade presiding. A description of the new organization was given and a petition was signed by student members present. Officer elections were held at a second meeting on March 26 and on April 11, 1998, a formal request was sent to ETA KAPPA NU's Headquarters (which included 21 student signatures, letters of endorsement from the University President, Provost, College Dean and EE Department chair) to establish a chapter at USF.

On April 25, 1998, the new Kappa Xi Chapter was installed and 21 charter members were initiated. Robert F. Arehart, past International ETA KAPPA NU president (1990-91), came from Philadelphia, PA to conduct the Initiation ritial. Dean Michael Kovac welcomed the new initiates and EE Department Chair Lee Stefanakos relayed his best wishes.

Charter members of the chapter include Sameer Azad, Wayne Bromstad II, Wesley Caldwell Jr., Mark Chase, Brent Graham, Kayoko Hickman, Joseph Ollei, Kris Skowronski, Hung Vuong, Jennifer Ann Weed, Jonathan Werner, Chad Coates, Valerie Anne Olson, Han Li and Muhul Shah.
